Karen House

Andrei Pungovschi

Karen House is a shelter for homeless women and children, established in 1977, in north Saint Louis.
Over the years, Karen House has given shelter to many victims of broken marriages, pregnant teenagers or runaway wives, looking for a place to calm down and think things over.

This story was a two-day assignment in Saint Louis for The Missourian, University of Missouri’s newspaper, where I was on staff as part of a class. It was just one part of a bigger story about communal living, written by Besa Luci, a fellow reporter (here’s the link to her article http://www.voxmagazine.com/stories/2007/07/26/living-fringe/ ). It was a really short time for a story, which made it hard to get people to relax in our presence. They did, however, and I’m grateful for their trust.

  1. Nice, sensitive, interesting. Love the shot of Keila Banks and “Sincere” (gad, will that name spawn another “boy named Sue” song someday?)

  2. The click to hide/show caption always being ontop of the picture is somewhat distracting. Especially in the photo in this story of Robert Playing basketball. Consider making that bar a roll over so it will not cut into the image unless the mouse scrolls over the photo.

All in all, great site, I will surely be back to check out more excellent work.

  3. This is a very nice set of photographs. It is a great snapshot of the love at the Karen House. I am excited to see artwork depicting the neighbors in North St. Louis City that both of our agencies serve. Keep up the excellent work Karen House!!! Kudos to the photographer.

Shortly after becoming homeless in August of 2008, the couple decided to give up a life long struggle with substance addiction in order to get back on their feet. “We was homeless and gave it up,” said Del. “It was a struggle for me to learn to be a person again, sober and be without alcohol.”
